<p>書式文字列は定数式でなければならず、その妥当性がコンパイル時にチェックされる。実行時に決まるフォーマット文字列を使用したい場合、<code><a href="vformat.html">vformat</a></code>を使用できる。</p>
<p>C++23以降、書式指定で出力する<code><a href="../print/print.html">std::print()</a></code>、<code><a href="../print/println.html">std::println()</a></code>関数が定義される。</p>
<h3>書式文字列</h3>
<p>書式文字列中では、<code>{</code>と<code>}</code>で囲まれた範囲が置換フィールドとなる(エスケープシーケンスは<code>{{</code>と<code>}}</code>)。</p>

<h3>コンパイル時の書式文字列チェック</h3>
<p>書式文字列は、<code><a href="basic_format_string.html">basic_format_string</a></code>クラスによってコンパイル時にチェックされる。</p>
<p><code><a href="basic_format_string.html">basic_format_string</a></code> のコンストラクタは<a href="../../lang/cpp20/immediate_functions.html">即時関数</a>であり、書式文字列が正しい場合にのみ定数式として評価できるように実装される。即時関数であるため、定数式として評価できない場合はエラーとなる。</p>
<p>書式文字列チェックをエラーがあった場合に<a class="cpprefjp-defined-word" data-desc="問題が発生したときに、現在実行位置を過去に通過・記録した位置に戻し、文脈情報を添えて紐づけられた処理(例外ハンドラー)を呼び出す仕組み。またはその事態">例外</a>を投げるような実装をすれば、<code>throw</code>は定数式として評価できないため、コンパイルエラーとすることが可能である。</p>
